Hang in there!

J’ai presque fini.

JLM Papineau 1949

PAPINEAU, F/O Louis Joseph Leopold Marcel (C5632) – Distinguished Flying Cross – No.425 Squadron – Award effective 5 April 1945 as per London Gazette dated 17 April 1945 and AFRO 918/45 dated 1 June 1945. Born 1911 in Outremont; home in Montreal (miner); enlisted in Montreal, 13 June 1941. Trained at No.9 AOS (graduated 6 August 1943). Medal presented in Montreal, 25 November 1949. No citation other than « completed…numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which [he has] invariably displayed the utmost courage and devotion to duty. » DHist file 181.009 D.1730 (PAC RG.24 Vol.20607) has recommendation dated 17 November 1944 when he had completed 28 sorties (146 hours 40 minutes):

This navigator was detailed to attack Kiel on September 15th, 1944, and experienced very concentrated anti-aircraft fire when his aircraft made three orbits to identify the genuine target.

Despite the fact that the aircraft was coned for five minutes after completing the third orbit, where the flak was so intense causing the starboard wing main spar to break and rendering the fuselage unserviceable for future operations, this officer, with cool courage and confidence, made possible a good bombing result. Although all navigational equipment were unserviceable before reaching the target, Flying Officer Papineau showed outstanding efficiency as a navigator when he directed the aircraft safely back to base.

Flying Officer Papineau has completed twenty-eight sorties over heavily defended targets such as Berlin, Dusseldorf, Dortmund and Duisburg. Throughout his tour, he has exhibited a high degree of skill, resolution and devotion to duty.

The exceptional ability and dogged determination which this officer has invariably displayed to complete his allotted tasks regardless of adverse weather or enemy opposition is worthy of high praise.

28 missions comme navigateur, une tâche qui n’était pas de tout repos.

Je n’ai pas d’autres informations sur ce navigateur, mais je sais qu’il a volé en même temps que Jean-Paul Corbeil.

Peut-être l’a-t-il connu…
